After dyeing, the belt edges are bevelled, and then dyed black with a wax impregnated dye that stops edge fibres lifting. This ensures that the belt always looks neat and well finished on its outer edges.
The final treatments before buckles are fitted include a light coat of neatsfoot oil to keep the belt reasonably supple and a coat of dubbin, well rubbed in to protect and waterproof.
The next choice is, what colour? We use spirit based, penetrating dyes for all our belts. These give deep rich colours that really glow but, don’t hide vein marks or wrinkles. Waterbased dyes look flat and lifeless and spraypainted leather looks like plastic and is used to cover inferior, cheap leathers (click About Leather).Look carefully at belts in different shops, you’ll see the difference. Although the next thing you see will be the six different colours we offer, you won’t be asked to make a choice until later.
At last, your final choice. You have to take a measurement to determine what length your new belt will be. Whether your old belt is a bit too long, or a bit too short, take a measurement from the tip of the buckle to the hole that you are using now. This measurement lets me calculate the correct length of the new belt, that is to say, that when you wear your new belt you should be using the centre hole of 5 holes. You can take this measurements in cm or inches as you will be typing this figure in later. Do not go by the number on the back of your old belt, manufacturers sizes vary. Even waist measurements of jeans or trousers can be inaccurate. The best way to measure for your new belt is to measure your old belt. Remember, measure from the tip of the buckle to the hole that you use now.
Your next choice is....What pattern?
Our patterned belts are hand patterned, not machine patterned, there is a huge difference. Machined patterns are put on by roller and so the design runs straight off of the end of the belt. Hand patterns are tooled in with small individual embossing tools and the design is tooled perfectly into the belt tip. The other benefit of working with small tools is the design is embossed deeper and clearer into the leather (click About Leather) Below are 4 pattern designs shown on natural cowhide. All 4 patterns can be used on any colour belt with any shape tip. You will be asked to make your pattern choice at the bottom of this page.
Now that you've decided on a 4cm patterned belt you need to decide.... Square, angled, pointed or round tip? Below, you've got all of your choices. This is the natural colour of cowhide, most people are surprised by this, thinking it should be darker.
You won't be asked to make your tip choice until further down the page. None of the choices on this page alter the price of the belt, so have exactly what you want.

Please check all your choices again. When you are sure all your choices are correct you can go on to pay (remember that postage and packing are included in the price). Whatever style of 4cm. belt you have chosen, there are many different buckles you can choose from. Each buckle will give the belt a very different look. Antique brass looking, or brushed aluminium looking. All buckles are from the same manufacturer and have proven to be strong and long wearing. All buckles are styles that don’t cause excessive wear to the belt edges (round or oval buckles tend to make belt edges fray,also cheap buckles tend to have sharp edges which cause the same problem). Look at the following buckle photos and note the number of the buckle that you would like on your belt. If you click on a buckle photo it will show what it looks like on a belt. You won’t be asked to make your choice until a little later.

If you choose the no buckle option, your belt will come with screw fittings instead of rivets. You’ll be able to fit your own buckle easily at home. €5.00 will automatically be deducted from the normal belt price.
If you have your own buckle and just want a good leather belt to put it on, follow the instructions above. Ignore where it asks you to measure from the tip of the buckle, measure from the fold in the leather instead. The example below shows 96cms if you want a complete belt or 91cms if you want a belt without a buckle.
